Several years ago, our church’s Sunday School was looking for a new pastor. At the time, Tammy and I were serving the youth group ministry together. But when the need became clear, she volunteered to teach the Sunday School children on her own. Week in and week out, I watched in awe as she prepared lessons and activities with so much heart and excellence - the kids were SO lucky to have her, and they knew it!

Then she met Brian. She wasn’t interested in him, but he pursued her like I’ve never seen anyone pursue a gal. He had a HUGE heart for kids, so he joined Sunday School staff (no ulterior motives, I’m sure ;)), incorporated his background as a scientist and did countless experiments with the kids, and spent hours loving them like his own. And of course, won Tammy’s heart along the way.

I’ve been floored by both of their hearts to love and serve where there is a need. When no one else wanted to take on a bunch of rowdy children, these two not only volunteered, but fully devoted themselves to the well-being of each child. As a mom, I know there is nothing more precious than that.

As Mr. Rogers says, “We live in a world in which we need to share responsibility. It’s easy to say “It’s not my child, not my community, not my world, not my problem. Then there are those who see the need and respond. I consider those people my heroes.”

To my very own heroes.. cheers!!
